Our Story

At Heartwood Gates, we believe that every gate should tell a story; one of craftsmanship, quality, and care. Led by Jonathan Leonard, we are a family-owned and operated gate builder rooted in tradition and precision. Our story began in 2016 when Jonathan and his father set out to fix what frustrated them most about the industry: sagging, poorly built gates that never stood the test of time.

From that passion grew Heartwood Gates, a dedicated brand of Fence and Gate Crafters, created to focus solely on high-quality, hand-built, custom wood gates. We proudly serve the East Bay Area and beyond, building each piece with meticulous attention to detail and the durability that only comes from years of true woodworking experience.

We specialize in Sapele hardwood, a sustainably sourced mahogany species that’s as strong as it is stunning. Every Heartwood Gate is constructed using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, ensuring long-lasting performance, stability, and beauty. And while our methods honor the craftsmanship of generations past, our use of modern CNC technology allows us to bring precision and creativity to every design we craft.
